Changes to the site and its content, newest first.
  1. Content

The Eucharist slides through four doors

The Eucharist Presentation (now twenty-two slides) has three new slides on why it matters: goodness (union with Christ), beauty (heaven’s worship around the Lamb) and oneness (“one loaf, one body,” and an honest answer to “why can’t I receive at Mass?”). The closing slide now asks one question for each of the four doors: truth, goodness, beauty and oneness. Every slide now shows which door it opens.

  2. Feature

Back links at the top of pages

Lessons, reference sheets, practice drills, Progress and the Changelog now have a back link at the top, such as “← Teachings” or “← Recall”. Reference sheets also link straight to the full lesson, and lessons and reference sheets link to the slides when a Presentation exists, so you don't have to scroll to the bottom on a phone.

  3. Feature

Start slides from the Teachings list

Teachings that have a Presentation now show a “slides” link next to the reference sheet on the Teachings page, so you can open the slides without going into the lesson first.

  4. Feature

Slides for Mary & the Saints

The Mary & the Saints lesson now has an eighteen-slide Presentation. It follows “the woman” from Genesis 3:15 through Eve, Jael and Judith to Mary, then the Ark at the Visitation, what it carried and Revelation 12, covers the Marian dogmas, and finishes with the one-mediator objection, intercession in Scripture and the difference between honor and worship.

  5. Feature

    Slides for Justification

The Justification lesson now has a fourteen-slide Presentation. It starts with what both sides agree on, then covers imputed and infused righteousness, the strongest Protestant objection, “works of the law,” Paul and James, Clement and Chrysostom, and the Council of Trent.

  6. Feature

    Slides for The Church Fathers

The Church Fathers lesson now has a nine-slide Presentation on who the Fathers were and why they matter. It states both positions fairly, takes the “you can find a Father to say anything” objection head on, concedes what is true, and then shows what Clement, Ignatius and Justin held in common.

  7. Feature

    Slides for Papal Authority

The Papal Authority lesson now has a twelve-slide Presentation on Peter, the keys and apostolic succession. It covers the rock, the Greek and Aramaic wording, Isaiah 22, Paul’s rebuke of Peter and the elder question, with the strongest Protestant reply on each. Quotes from Clement of Rome and Irenaeus were checked against the original texts.

  8. Feature

Slides for the Canon of Scripture

The Canon of Scripture lesson now has a fourteen-slide Presentation on why the Catholic Old Testament has 46 books. It covers the Jewish canon, the early lists, Luther and the 66-book Bible, with the strongest Protestant reply on each argument. Quotes from Athanasius, Pope Innocent I, Carthage and Florence were checked against the original texts.

  9. Feature

    Slides for Sola Scriptura

The Sola Scriptura lesson now has a fourteen-slide Presentation that asks whether the doctrine is biblical, historical, workable and logical. Each argument comes with the best Protestant reply. Fathers' quotes were checked against the original texts.

  10. Content

    Emmaus joins the meals map

The Eucharist Presentation now has a slide on the Emmaus meal (Luke 24): the risen Jesus takes, blesses, breaks and gives bread, and the disciples' eyes are opened. It is also the ninth stop on the meals map, which now runs in three rows.

  11. Content

A simpler “Questions to take home” slide

The last slide of the Eucharist Presentation now has four question cards (the miracle meals, the Bible, the first Christians, why it matters, which spans the full width and lists three fruits of Communion from the Catechism), a single “Read next” pointer to John 6, and a bolder invitation to read John 6 together.

  12. Content

A clearer “the flesh profits nothing” slide

The “the flesh profits nothing” slide in the Eucharist Presentation now shows three cards side by side: Jesus' “my flesh” earlier in John 6, the “the flesh” of verse 63, and what “flesh” usually means in John (3:6, 8:15), with a note on Paul's use in Romans 8:8.

  13. Content

The wedding supper in the slides

The Eucharist Presentation (now eighteen slides) has a new slide for the last meal on the map: Jesus says he won't drink the cup again until the Kingdom (Matthew 26:29, Luke 22:16), and Revelation 19 shows “the marriage supper of the Lamb.”

  14. Content

The meals map shows the order

On the Eucharist Presentation's “thread of meals” slide, the meals are now numbered and joined by arrows, in the order they happen from Melchizedek to the wedding supper.

  15. Content

Jeremiah's “new covenant” in the slides

The “new covenant” slide in the Eucharist Presentation now sets Jeremiah 31's promise of a new covenant and of forgiveness beside Jesus' words at the Last Supper (Luke 22:20, Matthew 26:28).

  16. Content

    A stronger opening slide

The first slide of the Eucharist Presentation now sets the scene (the night before he died, a meal with his twelve closest friends, words Christians still repeat), highlights Jesus' own words in Luke 22, and ends with a question for the listener.

  17. Content

    Updated “Questions to take home”

The last slide of the Eucharist Presentation now has six questions that follow the slides: the meals map, Jesus repeating himself in John 6, “my flesh” vs. “the flesh,” Paul on guilt, the earliest Christians, and “once for all.”

  18. Content

A clearer “once for all” slide

The “isn't Christ's sacrifice once for all?” slide in the Eucharist Presentation now sets the concern (Hebrews 10) beside what the Church teaches (Catechism 1366–1367: the one sacrifice made present, not repeated), then points to the altar in Hebrews 13:10.

  19. Content

    A livelier “earliest Christians” slide

The “What the earliest Christians believed” slide in the Eucharist Presentation now reads as a short timeline (about 107, 155 and 350). Each writer gets a line on who he was and why he was writing, with the key phrase of his quote highlighted.

  20. Content

    A simpler Paul slide

The “What Paul told the Corinthians” slide in the Eucharist Presentation now shows two short cards, “It is a real sharing” (1 Corinthians 10:16) and “Misusing it is serious” (11:27, 29), with the key phrases highlighted, in place of two long verses. The “the flesh profits nothing” slide also lost two bullets and gained the “my flesh” vs. “the flesh” point.

  21. Content

“The flesh” vs. “my flesh” in John 6

The “the flesh profits nothing” slide in the Eucharist Presentation now points out that Jesus says “my flesh” throughout the chapter (6:51, 54, 55, 56) but only “the flesh” in 6:63. The Greek verb note on the “Jesus doubles down” slide is also now marked on the word itself.

  22. Content

More context on the Sinai covenant meal

The Sinai slide in the Eucharist Presentation now sets the scene (Israel rescued, the covenant sealed with blood and then a meal in God's presence) and compares Exodus 24 with the Last Supper in two pairs, followed by how Hebrews connects them.

  23. Content

Jesus as the fulfilment of Melchizedek

The Melchizedek slide in the Eucharist Presentation now sets Melchizedek beside Christ in three pairs: a priest of God Most High, a priest who doesn't end (Hebrews 5, 7), and the bread and wine at the Last Supper, followed by the Catechism's reading.

  24. Content

A sharper “Jesus doubles down” slide

In the Eucharist Presentation, the slide on John 6 now shows the crowd's objection, Jesus adding “unless you eat… and drink his blood,” the disciples calling it a hard saying, and many leaving, with key phrases highlighted and a small note on the Greek verb for “eat”.

  25. Content

Eucharist slides follow the meals map

The Eucharist Presentation (now seventeen slides) covers the meals in the same order as the “thread of meals” map: Melchizedek, Passover, manna, Sinai, Elisha and the five thousand, then the Last Supper. Melchizedek and Sinai each have their own slide, the map adds Elisha and the five thousand, and each slide says which meal on the map it covers.

  26. Fix

Clearer labels on the Eucharist slides' meals

In the Eucharist Presentation, the Sinai covenant meal is now marked as named in the New Testament (Hebrews 9:18–20 quotes Moses' words), and Melchizedek's bread and wine is marked as taught by the Church (Catechism 1333) instead of “a later Christian reading”.

  27. Content

A closer reading of John 6 in the slides

The Eucharist Presentation (now sixteen slides) has a new slide before the figure-of-speech slide that shows John 6:51–58 as it reads, with the repeated words highlighted (“eat my flesh and drink my blood”, “food indeed”, “drink indeed”). The Elisha slide was redone as a side-by-side with the feeding of the five thousand, and the four-actions slide now shows each meal getting bigger.

  28. Content

Elisha's loaves in the Eucharist slides

The Eucharist Presentation (now fifteen slides) has a new slide setting Elisha feeding a hundred men with twenty barley loaves (2 Kings 4) beside Jesus feeding the five thousand (John 6): barley loaves, “so many?”, and food left over. John doesn't name Elisha, so the slide calls it an echo.

  29. Feature

    Full screen for slides

The Presentation now has a full-screen button (or press F) that hides the browser's toolbars. Press Esc once to leave full screen, and again to leave the slides. It isn't available on iPhone, where the browser doesn't allow it.

  30. Feature

    Teach the Eucharist as slides

The Eucharist Lesson now has a “Teach this as slides” button that opens a thirteen-slide Presentation for a friend or family member who isn't Catholic: the Last Supper, a map of the meals running through the Bible, the Passover and manna side by side with the New Testament, how Jesus and John explain misread figures of speech and why John 6 reads differently, and the earliest Christians.

  31. Content

“The New lies hidden in the Old”

The old saying about how the Old and New Testaments fit together (traced to Augustine, quoted in the Catechism) now opens the Type Drill with his portrait, appears in the Eucharist lesson, and is a new Fathers drill entry.

  32. Content

    More Eucharist connections

Two new Types (the covenant meal on Sinai and the Bread of the Presence), three Verse drill passages (John 6:60-66, Malachi 1:11, Hebrews 13:10) and a Flashcard on how Jesus takes, blesses, breaks and gives the bread.

  33. Content

    Ephesians 2 in context

Three new Verse drill passages (Hebrews 5:8-9, 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9, Ephesians 2:11-16) and a Pushback question on answering “Ephesians 2:8-9 settles it” fairly, without overstating what “works” means.

  34. Content

More Justification verses and a judgment-day question

Seven new Verse drill passages on works and eternal life (Matthew 25, Revelation 20, Luke 10, Mark 10, 1 John 2, 1 Timothy 6, Luke 3), plus a Pushback question on how to talk about the sheep and the goats with a friend who sees works as only the evidence of faith.

  35. Content

    New Papal Authority flashcard

A card on why Matthew 18:18 (binding and loosing for all the apostles) doesn't erase Peter's keys in Matthew 16:19.

  36. Feature

Full verses in the Verse drill

After you answer, the Verse drill now shows the whole passage in the World English Bible, with a link to read it in the RSV-CE.

  37. Feature

    Activity and card charts

Progress now shows when you've practised and how your Flashcards are coming along.

    • Your activity: a 12-week grid, one square per day, darker when you answered more. No streaks.
    • Your cards: one bar showing how many Flashcards are new, learning and mastered.
    • Home shows a short "cards mastered" bar once you've rated a card.
  38. Feature

    Flashcard progress you can see

Flashcards now show how far through the round you are, and what you've learned, right away.

    • A progress bar and "7 of 12 done" replace the old "left this round" count.
    • Cards are counted as new, learning or mastered, so a Got it moves a card out of new immediately.
    • At the end of a round you see how many you got and missed, when the next cards come back, and can review just the missed ones.
  39. Fix

    Better on phones

The Progress table no longer scrolls sideways, and Pushback practice is easier to use on a small screen.

    • Progress: the Learn, Recall and Rehearse explanations now open in a full-width card under the headings.
    • Rehearse: the two self-rating buttons sit side by side, and Next question takes you back up to the question number.
  40. Feature

    Learn, Recall, Rehearse

The menu, Home page and Progress table now use the same three words. Learn is the Teachings. Recall holds Flashcards and the verse, Fathers and Type drills. Rehearse holds Pushback practice and the Conversation drill. The old Practice page is now split between Recall and Rehearse. The Home page title is now simply “Understanding Catholicism”.

  41. Feature

    Progress at a glance

The Progress page now opens with one table of all 22 Teachings, showing Lesson, Recall and Articulation side by side so weak spots stand out. Each cell uses a symbol as well as a colour, and each title opens its lesson. Tap Lesson, Recall or Say it at the top to see what earns each symbol.

  42. Feature

A new Home page and a Teachings page

Home is now a short landing page with three ways in (Learn, Practice, Prepare for a conversation), a suggested four-Teaching path, and a link back to where you left off. The list of all 22 Teachings has moved to a new Teachings page in the menu, opening with Augustine's line on trusting the Gospel through the Church's authority. Lesson pages now link back to Teachings.

  43. Content

    1 Peter 3:15 and Jude 3

Added 1 Peter 3:15 (the "give an answer with humility" verse) to the Pushback panel and the Verses drill, and Jude 3 to the Verses drill and the Scripture and Tradition lesson. Both were checked against the World English Bible.

  44. Content

    The Sign of the Cross

New material on the Sign of the Cross: what it means, how it is made, early evidence from Tertullian and Cyril of Jerusalem, and the reply to "it's superstition or vain repetition". Added to the Images and Repetition lesson and reference sheet, two flashcards, a Pushback question, two Fathers entries and three verses. The Fathers and verses were checked against their texts.

  45. Content

    Development, not invention

New material on the charge that the Church invents doctrines: public revelation closed with the apostles, so a new dogma defines what the deposit of faith already held. Added to the Scripture and Tradition lesson and reference sheet, a flashcard, a Pushback question, Vincent of Lérins in the Fathers drill, and Galatians 1:8-9 and Matthew 28:19-20 in the Verses drill. Each source was checked against its text.

  46. Fix

    iPhone Home Screen icon fallback

The cross icon is now also served at the default address iPhones check, so Add to Home Screen is more likely to show it instead of a plain letter tile.

  47. Content

Nine more verses in the Verses drill

New verses for Sola scriptura, Justification, the Eucharist, Mary and the Saints, and Predestination: 2 Peter 3:15-16, James 2:14-26, Matthew 26:26-28, 1 Corinthians 10:16-17, 1 Timothy 2:1-5, Hebrews 12:22-24, John 6:44, 1 Corinthians 4:7 and Philippians 2:13. Each was checked against the public-domain World English Bible.

  48. Feature

A steady way to answer, on Pushback practice

The Pushback page now ends with a short three-step method for real conversations: ask one clarifying question, name the shared conviction, then offer one distinction and stop.

  49. Content

Council of Florence on the canon

The Canon of Scripture lesson, reference sheet and a new flashcard now mention that the Council of Florence's 1442 decree for the Copts lists all 46 Old Testament books before the Reformation, with a note on what it does and doesn't show. Checked against the council text.

  50. Content

Clement of Rome on handing on the apostles' office

The Fathers drill now has 1 Clement 44: the apostles knew there would be strife over the office of bishop, so they arranged for approved men to succeed them. Checked against the public-domain translation.

  51. Content

Five more verses on apostolic authority

The Verses drill now has Matthew 18:18, Acts 15:28, Titus 1:5, 1 John 4:6 and 3 John 9-10, on the apostles' authority and handing it on. They are marked "Not yet checked" until the paraphrases are verified.

  52. Fix

    Home Screen icon on iPhone

The icon you get from Add to Home Screen on iOS now has a solid crimson background, so its corners no longer show as black.

  53. Content

Sheen quote and portrait on the Practice page

The Fulton Sheen line about what people wrongly believe the Catholic Church is now a banner with his portrait at the top of the Practice page, like the Newman quote on Home. The source is checked: the Preface to Radio Replies, vol. 1 (1938).

  54. Fix

    Simpler Conversation drill

After Compare, the Conversation drill now shows the model answer and charity check together, then a second step to rate your reply. On-device feedback is tucked into an optional section and reads as clear paragraphs. The Compare button also matches the other drill buttons.

  55. Feature

    Search

A new Search page finds where the site covers a topic, verse, Church Father or term across Lessons, Reference sheets, Verses, Fathers, Pushback questions, Conversation lines and Flashcards. Press / on any page to open it.

    • Typing a citation like "Eph 2:8" or "Jn 3:5" finds the matching verse.
    • Verses and Fathers quotations that have not been checked yet keep their "Not yet checked" badge in results.
    • Search works offline once the site has loaded.
  56. Content

    Refocused on Protestants

Lessons, drills and the coach now speak about talking with Protestants (Reformed, Baptist, evangelical, Church of Christ) instead of with family members.

    • The Scripture and Tradition opener and other lesson intros no longer assume a family member is asking.
    • The Conversation and Pushback drills, the Practice hub and the on-device coach use the same wording.
  57. Feature

    New name: Deep in History

The app is now called Deep in History, after Newman's line “To be deep in history is to cease to be a Protestant.” It appears with his portrait at the top of the home page.

    • The quotation was checked against the text: it is from the 1878 edition (Introduction §5), not the 1845 first edition, and the exact wording includes “a”.
    • The name appears in the page title, the footers and when you install it on your device.
  58. Feature

Progress shown in the lesson list

The home page no longer has “Continue” and “Study next” banners. Each lesson now shows ○, ◐ or ● for not started, in progress or completed, with a count above the list.

    • Your saved progress is unchanged, and “Study next” advice is still on the Progress page.
  59. Content

More practice on faith and works

The Verse drill has 11 new passages, the Fathers drill has 4 new quotations, and Conversation has 3 new lines on justification.

    • The Chrysostom (Homily 31 on John) and 1 Clement 30 and 32 quotations were checked against the texts. Augustine's Letter 194 is marked “Not yet checked.”
    • Pushback question 3 has a new follow-up about Luther and James. The new Verse paraphrases are marked “Not yet checked.”
  60. Content

    New Lesson: What “Justified” Means

Teaching 22 explains how the Reformers and the Church use the word “justified” differently, with Luther's story and a way to talk about Paul and James.

    • It adds the terms Justification, Sanctification, Imputed righteousness and Infused righteousness to the glossary.
    • The Trent, Benedict XVI, Luther and Chrysostom quotations were checked against the texts. The Calvin and McGrath references are marked “Not yet checked”.
  61. Content

    New Lesson: The Church Fathers

Teaching 21 explains who the Church Fathers and Apostolic Fathers were, how to answer “the Fathers disagree,” and how to cite them honestly.

    • It has a reference sheet and four Checks.
    • The reading list is marked “Not yet checked”.
  62. Content

More Fathers quotations, checked against the texts

The Fathers drill now has 22 quotations (10 per round), and most were checked against the public-domain translations.

    • Fixed citations: Ignatius, Smyrnaeans 7 (not 6); Cyprian's “the bishop is in the Church” is Letter 68; Cyril's lectures are numbered 22 and 23.
    • Still marked “Not yet checked”: Origen on infant baptism, Augustine's Sermon 169 and Pacian.
    • A widely shared “Chrysostom” quotation on faith and works could not be found in his writings, so it was left out.
  63. Content

    New Lesson: Confirmation

Teaching 20 explains what Confirmation is, answers the “extra ceremony” objection, and has a reference sheet and four Checks.

    • It matters for OCIA because candidates are usually confirmed at the Easter Vigil.
    • The early-writer reference is marked “Not yet checked”.
  64. Content

    Two quotations added

A Newman quotation now opens the reading in the Great Apostasy Lesson, and a Fulton Sheen quotation sits on the Conversation drill page.

    • Both are marked “Not yet checked” until the wording and source are confirmed.
  65. Content

Extra talking points in six Lessons

Scripture & Tradition, Justification, Papal Authority, Mary & the Saints, the Eucharist and Confession each gain a short “More points to check” list in the Catholic response.

    • These come from your own study notes and are marked “Not yet checked” until verified against sources.
  66. Content

Twelve more passages in the Verse drill

The Verse drill now has 32 passages, adding verses on the Church as pillar of truth, apostolic succession, works and grace, Mary and the saints.

    • Each new passage is a paraphrase and is marked “Not yet checked” until verified against a translation.
  67. Feature

One Practice page for every drill

The menu is now Home, Teachings, Practice, Progress and Theme. Practice lists every drill and Weak-spot review in one place.

    • The Fathers, Verse, Conversation and Weak-spot drills are now one tap away from the menu.
    • Each drill ends with a link back to Practice and a link to the next drill.
    • Drill buttons and answer choices on the Fathers, Verse and Conversation drills now match the rest of the app.
  68. Feature

    Listen to Lessons

The first four sections of every Lesson now have a Listen button that reads the section aloud, with Pause, Stop and a gear button that appear only while it plays. The gear opens the speed and voice choices.

    • Retrieval practice reads the questions and options but not the answers.
    • It uses your device's built-in voices, so nothing is sent anywhere. Voice quality depends on your device.
  69. Feature

Questions for my priest or sponsor

Each Lesson now ends with a private notes box for questions you want to bring to a priest or sponsor, and sensitive Teachings suggest talking to a person.

    • Notes stay on this device and are included when you export Progress, and replaced when you import.
    • Resetting Progress also clears your notes.
  70. Feature

    “Not yet checked” labels

Patristic Types, Verse and Fathers drill answers, and the “Then they'll say…” replies now show a small “Not yet checked” label until their sources have been verified.

  71. Content

New Lesson: Holy Orders and priestly celibacy

A new Lesson and Reference sheet that separates three questions: why priests, why “Father,” and why celibacy, with four Checks.

  72. Content

    New Lesson: Mary's perpetual virginity

A new Lesson and Reference sheet on “the brothers of Jesus,” “until,” and “firstborn,” with four Checks.

  73. Content

    New Lesson: The abuse scandal

A new Lesson and Reference sheet on how to answer honestly and compassionately when family raises the clergy abuse scandal, with three Checks.

  74. Content

New Lesson: The “Great Apostasy” claim

A new Lesson and Reference sheet on the idea that the early Church fell away and was restored, with a fair steelman, a Catholic response and four Checks.

  75. Content

    “Then they'll say…” follow-ups in Pushback

Six Pushback questions now show the likely next objection and a short, charitable reply, so you can practice a whole conversation.

    • Covers Scripture & Tradition, Justification, Mary & the Saints, the Eucharist, Papal Authority, and Purgatory.
  76. Feature

Optional on-device feedback in the Conversation drill

On desktop Chrome with built-in AI, you can ask for feedback on your written reply, with no account and no cost.

    • It runs on your device and your reply never leaves it. The first use downloads a model after you click.
    • It comments on tone and clarity only and never affects Progress. Other browsers and phones just see a short note.
  77. Feature

    New Fathers drill

Match short quotations to the early Church Father who wrote them, and see which Teaching each one supports.

    • The quotations are close paraphrases, so check each against the cited work before quoting it to anyone.
  78. Feature

    New Verse drill

Match 20 key Scripture passages to what they say and the Teaching they support, in either direction.

    • Weak-spot review also picks up missed verses.
  79. Feature

    New Weak-spot review

See everything you most recently missed across Checks, Flashcards, Pushback, Types and the Conversation drill, grouped by Teaching.

    • An item drops off the list as soon as you get it right.
  80. Feature

    New Conversation drill

Practice replying to ten realistic lines from family in your own words, then compare with a model answer and a charity check.

    • Your written reply stays in the browser and is never saved.
    • Your “Did your reply hold up?” rating counts toward Articulation on the Progress page.
  81. Fix

Progress: right answers no longer read as Shaky

Recall and Articulation now show Building when your recent answers are right but there isn't enough practice yet to call it Solid.

    • Shaky now means recent misses.
    • Solid still needs repeated, spaced practice: Flashcards climbing to the later boxes, and three or more pushback answers you could say aloud.
  82. Feature

Types: Old Testament patterns fulfilled in the New

Lessons can now show a Type, with its citation and whether the New Testament or a Church Father names it. A new Type drill practices matching each Type to its fulfilment.

    • Reference sheets for Baptism, the Eucharist, Mary & the Saints, Images & Repetition and the Nicene Creed now list their Types.
    • Peter and Eliakim (keys of the kingdom), and the Ark of the Covenant and Mary, both marked as Patristic readings.
    • The Type drill can review just the Types you missed.
    • Type drill: match a Type to its fulfilment, or a fulfilment back to its Type. Results count toward recall.
    • Baptism: the Flood and Noah's ark (1 Peter 3:20-21).
    • The Eucharist: the Passover lamb and the manna.
    • The Eucharist: Melchizedek's bread and wine, marked as a Patristic reading.
    • Mary & the Saints: Eve and Mary, marked as a Patristic reading.
    • Baptism: circumcision and Adam. Images & Repetition: the bronze serpent. The Nicene Creed: Jonah.
  83. Content

    Canon of Scripture: stronger replies

The canon lesson now covers the common pushbacks about 73 versus 66 books.
