What did Jesus give his friends that night?

The night before he died, Jesus shared a meal with his twelve closest friends. Christians around the world still repeat the words he said over the bread and the cup. What did he mean?

He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.” Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”Luke 22:19-20 (World English Bible)

Read those words slowly. If you were hearing them for the first time, what would you take them to mean?
