The Abuse Scandal — Cheat Sheet
The objection and the response
| Objection | Response |
|---|---|
| The abuse and cover-ups disqualify the Church | Agree they were grave evil. Christ's promise concerns preserving teaching and sacraments, not sinless leaders |
| Bishops protected abusers | Own it plainly. Do not deflect with comparisons |
| The Spirit can't be guiding this | Judas, Peter's denial and Ezekiel 34 show unfaithful leaders existed from the start |
Key verses
| Verse | Used for |
|---|---|
| Matthew 7:16 | Objection: judge by fruits. |
| Matthew 18:6 | Jesus' severe warning to anyone who harms a child. |
| Ezekiel 34 | God's judgment on shepherds who harm the flock. |
The one-line argument to remember
Start from agreement: "It was evil, and the cover-ups made it worse. I'm not going to excuse it, and I'd like to tell you honestly how I'm thinking about it."
Nuance to hold onto
- Never lead with "other groups have it too."
- Separate infallibility (narrow teaching claims) from leaders' conduct.
- It's fine to say "I don't have a full answer." Encourage talking with a priest or sponsor.
