Baptism — Cheat Sheet
Positions at a glance
| Position | Claim |
|---|---|
| Church of Christ | Immersion after a personal confession of faith is part of salvation; infant baptism is invalid. |
| Baptist / Bible-church | Believer's baptism is a public symbol of salvation already received. |
| Reformed (Presbyterian) | Baptism is the covenant sign, so infants of believers are baptized, but it does not itself save. |
| Catholic | A sacrament that forgives sin and gives new birth; given to believing adults and to infants. |

The one-line argument to remember
Start where you agree. Baptism truly forgives sin and saves. Then the real question is only whether children of believers may receive it, as they received circumcision.
Nuance to hold onto
- No verse says "they baptized an infant." Admit that, then make the cumulative case.
- Earliest explicit evidence: Origen (c. 244) and Cyprian's council (253), with infant baptism described as received from the apostles.
- The Didache (c. 100) allows pouring water three times, so mode is not a dividing line for validity.
- Whether a baptism received elsewhere is recognized depends on water and the Trinitarian formula; ask your priest or OCIA team.
